Research Interests

Mara is a Principal Investigator and Head of Veterinary Viral Surveillance at the Moredun Research Institute. Mara has more than 25 years' research experience working with tick borne-pathogens and, more recently, in the diagnosis and surveillance of tick-borne disease. Moredun Research Institute is part of the Scottish veterinary surveillance partnership where it contributes to the development, validation and delivery of specialised diagnostic tests. More recently, the VSU has begun supporting work aimed at understanding the risk for the human population from tick-transmitted diseases (zoonoses such as, louping ill, tick borne fever, babesiosis and Lyme disease) by developing pathogen-specific tests which are employed for testing of both host and ticks.
